Irido-what?

I have a patient who needs an iridodialysis repair after being hit in the eye. The natural response to this statement is, “what is an iridodialysis?” An iridodialysis is a tear of the iris, which is the colored part of the eye that we often call “brown” or “blue.” If the iris tear is located such that the iris is torn where it connects to the rest of the eye, the tear is called an iridodialysis. Other tears of the iris often do not have special names. When I operate on the injured eye, part of the goal will be to sew the torn area of the iris back into the location that it should be. The reason I want to repair the iridodialysis is to give a more “normal” look to the eye as well as to make the iris function better, since part of the iris’s function is to block some light from entering the eyeball.
