Steroid Implants

I have a patient who had inflammatory swelling of his retina. This has been a persistent issue that keeps rearing its head for us. He has had steroid implants into the back of his eye for this in the past.

Recently, he got another type of steroid implant in the back of his eye. This one is supposed to last for three years! His previous ones lasted about three months. Therefore, he is quite happy! The one major consideration we have to be careful about is that the eye pressure doesn’t go up; he hasn’t had too much of an issue with eye pressure increases related to steroids in the past. These long-lasting steroid implants in the eye can be quite hazardous from an eye pressure standpoint in patients who are sensitive to them.
