Retinitis Pigmentosa Treatment

One retinal disease that all eye doctors know about is retinitis pigmentosa (RP). It is a very common inherited retinal disease, and, in some ways, may be thought of as the quintessential inherited retinal disease.

Unfortunately, there is no good treatment for it. As an ophthalmologic community, we have heard a lot about use of high dose vitamin A for retinitis pigmentosa. In the March 2025 edition of the journal Ophthalmology, Dr. Neeraj Jain and colleagues published a paper that suggested that there is no good evidence to support the use of vitamin A or any other supplements in RP. While this is disappointing, it is always important to know that state of the evidence.
