Red Light Therapy

In the June 2024 edition of JAMA Ophthalmology, a group from China published a study about using low levels of red light to slow the progression of nearsightedness.

Nearsightedness tends to be a bigger problem in East Asia than it is in the rest of the world. That is why studies in China tend to be most common in studying how to prevent the worsening of nearsightedness.

Is red light therapy the best method? We definitely don’t know, and we certainly are unaware of whether this applies to non-Asian populations. Of course, it’s good to see promising data, so we might have more treatment options in the future.
