This weekend, I was at a kids birthday party that my daughter was attending. I ended up in a conversation with other parents about someone who has “perfect eyesight” at age 39. I said, “prepare for whining coming soon. =)”

People who have never had to wear glasses and have basically taken great eyesight for granted all their lives do not do well when presbyopia kicks in around age 40. What is presbyopia? In a nutshell, it is a need for reading glasses when distance vision is good.

As I mentioned, the people who are most aggravated by this are those who have always had great vision at all distances. The concept of glasses for reading doesn’t seem so bad to those of us who have worn glasses, but it doesn’t strike everyone the same way.

Let this serve as a reminder that reading glasses kick in around age 40!
