Laser Correction and Breastfeeding

The prevailing historical thought in laser vision correction is that one should not perform laser vision correction on a patient who is breastfeeding as there can be hormonal effects on the cornea, so the vision correction may not work as intended. There have been some recent articles and opinions that this may not be necessary anymore, and that once the patient is a couple of months postpartum, laser vision correction can proceed as normal. I may be conservative in this regard, as I will still want patients to be done breastfeeding before I will perform laser vision correction. It is a correction meant to endure for decades, and waiting a few months is a reasonable “price to pay” in my opinion. Of course, this may change as technology changes and more data is collected, but that is where I stand for now.
