Yellow lenses
During cataract surgery, we have to remove the cataract and place a lens implant. Usually this is a clear lens implant, but there are also lens implants that have a yellow tint.
Does a yellow-tinted lens offers any real advantage over a clear one? The honest answer is that the difference is minimal for most people. While yellow lenses are designed to filter some blue light, the evidence that this meaningfully improves vision or protects the eye in everyday life is weak. Clear lenses provide excellent visual outcomes, and they allow the full range of light to reach the retina without subtly altering color perception.
In practice, patients with either type tend to see equally well and adapt quickly after surgery. Claims about reduced glare or better contrast with yellow lenses sound appealing, but they don’t consistently translate into noticeable benefits in real-world settings. For that reason, I usually reassure patients that choosing a clear lens is a perfectly sound, straightforward option. What matters far more than lens tint is the overall health of the eye and selecting the right lens design for your visual needs.
