Thyroid in my eye?
There is an association between thyroid disorders and ocular disorders. The “classic” association is between overactive thyroid and eyes bulging out.
In the November 2022 issue of the journal JAMA Ophthalmology, Dr. Yuan Pan and colleagues published a study that indicated that oral doxycycline might improve some of the symptoms of this thyroid eye disease, including that symptom of eyes bulging out. Doxycycline is traditionally thought of as an antibiotic medication to be used against bacteria. However, doxycycline is also thought to have some anti-inflammatory properties. Thyroid eye disease is thought of as an inflammatory condition, so there is a connection that could make one think that doxycycline could have this effect on thyroid eye disease, even though thyroid eye disease is clearly not a bacterial infection.
