Retinal Detachment after Cataract Surgery

In the December 2024 edition of the journal Ophthalmology, Dr. Bita Momenaei and colleagues published a study regarding retinal detachment and retinal tears after cataract surgery. They specifically focused on patients who had previously had treated retinal tears.

About 5% of the eyes had another retinal tear within 1 year after cataract surgery.

While retinal tear and detachment are definitely known issues after surgery, this data really clarifies the need for follow up and monitoring for those diagnoses after the operation. If you have had a previous retinal tear, definitely be on the lookout for flashes and floaters after cataract removal!
