Changing Eye Color
In the August 2022 edition of the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, there is an article edited by Nicole Fram about a patient who had BrightOcular iris implants placed to change her iris color. There is a lot of technical discussion in this article, but the important message from the article is that this is not a good idea. This is not an FDA approved procedure, and for good reason. The typical story is that a patient leaves the country in order to get this surgery done to “change their eye color” at significant financial cost. Then, the artificial iris implant starts causing severe eye diseases with the possibility of blindness.
The basic message here is, if anyone is thinking of getting a surgery to “change their eye color,” tell them NOT TO DO IT.
