Lens Loyalty
Recently I was perusing a forum in which ophthalmologists can write to one another. On that forum, there was a heated debate about a particular type of lens implant. Some thought that the lens implant was a very good and acceptable lens implant to use; others thought that the lens implant was a terrible one that should be removed from the market. It is amazing to me that there can be such a difference of opinion on the subject! Personally, I think that we as a community of ophthalmologists should defer to the individual surgeon. We should preserve the individual freedom to choose whichever lens implant works as long as it has been approved by industry regulators. There are lens implants that are really great (and some that are not so great) that we do not use in the United States because they have not been approved by regulation agencies. So, once the implant is through that approval process, I believe that it should be up to the individual surgeon.
