How big?
During cataract surgery, we have to create an entry point into the eyeball to do surgery inside the eye. There are different ways to make that entry, and there are different sizes that people use also! In modern cataract surgery, the size of this entry point is almost always smaller than 3mm. Sometimes it is even smaller than 2mm! These small entry points make it so that cataract surgery usually doesn’t require stitches and that the entry point doesn’t cause any lasting effect in the person’s eye. This wasn’t always the case, as the entries used to be 7 or 8 mm wide (or more!). Cataract surgery has evolved and continues to evolve, which is why I love doing it. I consider it the best thing that we do in medicine.
