Too high a prescription?

Sometimes patients come to me and state that they have too high a prescription for LASIK. What they usually mean is that they are near-sighted, with “minus” glasses prescription. They have been told that the “minus number” is too high for LASIK.

Basically, this is TRUE. I think that there have been successful cases of LASIK and LASIK-like surgeries for these high prescriptions, but there are too many issues to ignore. I recently read the report of a patient who is not doing perfectly well after her surgery, and I basically thought that some of these problems were predictable because the patient had too high a “minus number.” I would not recommend LASIK for those high prescription patients.

However, there are other options that are sometimes available for even those patients who are “super high minus.” So, if you are one of those people, it doesn’t hurt to ask if there is some option that can help you!
